Success in IVF treatment is not just a matter of medicine; it’s a team effort involving doctors, embryologists, coordinators… and you. Dr. Jan Jonáš, a reproductive medicine specialist at Prague Fertility Centre, has prepared an overview of proven dietary supplements that can positively influence treatment outcomes. Read how you can support your fertility and increase your chances of successful conception — because infertility treatment requires effort from all of us.

IVF is teamwork, and you are part of it

Infertility treatment is a complex process that relies on the precise work of professionals and the active involvement of patients. At Prague Fertility Centre, we believe every couple can influence the outcome — not only by trusting our team but also by how they prepare for IVF. Dr. Jan Jonáš recommends that women and men prepare not only mentally but also physically, for example through targeted supplementation.” These can support egg and sperm quality, endometrial health, and hormonal balance. A study published in Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology confirms that proper supplementation can increase the chance of successful fertilization by up to 20%.

Hormonal balance

The most effective supplements for women include folic acid (B9), vitamin D, coenzyme Q10 or myo-inositol with D‑chiro-inositol. These substances support ovulation, improve the quality of oocytes and endometrium, and help the body prepare for embryo transfer. For example, coenzyme Q10 increases cellular energy and can positively affect the mitochondrial function of eggs, which is key to their maturity. Myo-inositol is particularly suitable for women with PCOS, as it helps regulate insulin levels and thus hormonal balance, which is also confirmed by research published in Open Biology. It is important to start taking it ideally 2 – 3 months before the IVF cycle — this is approximately how long it takes for eggs to mature. It is also a good idea to supplement with vitamin E, L‑arginine or melatonin, which has antioxidant effects and improves sleep quality.

Sperm quality can be improved

Sperm quality is just as important as egg quality. Zinc, selenium, vitamin D, omega‑3 fatty acids, and ashwagandha can significantly improve sperm motility, morphology, and overall vitality. For example, a study in the Journal of Nutrition shows that omega‑3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effects and positively affect reproductive health. Ashwagandha also helps reduce stress, which can negatively affect hormone levels and thus spermatogenesis. Its effects on testosterone and sleep quality were confirmed in a meta-analysis published in PLoS One. Men have it a little easier in assisted reproduction, as they can largely influence sperm quality with a sensible lifestyle. However, the same applies to men: starting supplements at least 3 months before IVF is ideal.

Two keys to success: Consistency and consultation

Dietary supplements are not miracle pills. Their effect occurs with regular use.” warns Dr. Jonáš. For example, omega‑3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect, but their effect will only be apparent after a few weeks. And because every organism is different, we recommend consulting your doctor or nutritionist before using any supplement. A blood test can also help reveal more detailed information about whether you are missing any important substances. Only then can you be sure that you are supplementing a balanced diet with substances that meet your body’s needs. Also remember that not all dietary supplements are created equal, so don’t be afraid to ask experts which ones they would recommend to you.

Your active role matters — and results confirm it

IVF is not just about laboratory procedures or doctors’ decisions. It is a process that also includes your active participation — from preparing your body to following recommendations to daily health care. Even small changes such as psychohygiene, stress reduction and sufficient sleep can have a positive effect on the result of your treatment. The old saying applies here too — A healthy mind in a healthy body. We will be happy to discuss what interests you during a personal consultation. So do not hesitate to register so that you can be even closer to your dream baby today. At our clinic, Prague Fertility Centre, we strive to provide care that is professional but at the same time human. So if you are looking for specific advice on how to best prepare for IVF, we are here for you — with respect for your needs and without unnecessary phrases.
