Infertility
13.04.2026
When you’re trying for a baby and pregnancy isn’t happening, it’s completely natural to start looking for solutions that are gentle and, importantly, effective. One of the first methods couples encounter is intrauterine insemination (IUI). In this article, we explain in detail what the success rate of insemination is and when this method makes sense.
The success rate of intrauterine insemination, according to most studies, ranges approximately between 7 – 20% per cycle, with the exact chances depending mainly on the woman’s age, sperm quality, and the underlying cause of fertility issues.
What Is Intrauterine Insemination?
It is a method of assisted reproduction in which high‑quality sperm is introduced directly into the uterine cavity during ovulation. This step increases the likelihood of fertilization and helps sperm reach the egg more easily. The procedure itself is brief, and most women compare it to a routine gynecological examination.
What Studies Say About the Success Rate of Insemination
When evaluating the chances of getting pregnant, it’s always best to rely on multiple studies rather than a single number. These studies consistently show that the success rate of insemination per cycle most often ranges between 7 – 20%.
A clinical study “Predicting success of intrauterine insemination using a clinically based scoring system” published in 2022 analyzed 1,437 cycles in 758 couples. The results showed that pregnancy occurred in approximately 10.9% of cycles. With repeated attempts, the success rate increased to nearly 20%. The study also confirmed that the most influential factors are the woman’s age, sperm quality, and the specific fertility issue.
Another study, “Pregnancy Rate of Intrauterine Insemination in an IVF Unit” (2025), conducted at an IVF center in Riyadh, confirmed a 13.4% success rate per cycle, with higher chances among women under 35 and couples who had been trying for a shorter period.
The success of intrauterine insemination also depends on the type of treatment used during the cycle. Data from the 2017 review “Intrauterine Insemination: Fundamentals Revisited” show that insemination without hormonal stimulation has a success rate of around 7%, while hormonal support of ovulation can increase the chance to 12% per cycle.
All results confirm that insemination can be an effective first step in treating infertility, but its success depends on the couple’s individual situation. That’s why at Prague Fertility Centre we always evaluate test results comprehensively and work with patients to find the approach that makes the most sense for them.
What Most Influences the Success of Insemination
Statistics should be taken with some caution and viewed more as orientation. In practice, everything depends on health‑related factors.
Woman’s age is one of the most important factors. Women under 35 have the highest chance of success with this method. For women of higher age, we often recommend considering other methods.
Sperm quality also plays a significant role. Insemination can help when the partner has a slightly reduced sperm count, lower motility, or issues with ejaculation.
At least one fallopian tube must be open for IUI to work. Otherwise, sperm cannot reach the egg.
Length of time trying to conceive also affects success. If it has already been several years, we recommend accelerating treatment and choosing a method with a higher success rate.
How Insemination Works
The insemination process is simple, painless, takes only a few minutes, and is usually performed on an outpatient basis without anesthesia. Thanks to this, it is the least invasive method of assisted reproduction.
Initial consultation: After filling out the form, our coordinator will contact you, answer your questions, and schedule a consultation with a doctor. The doctor will take your medical history and perform the necessary examinations.
Examinations: The woman undergoes an ultrasound, we check the cervix, and take blood to assess the hormonal profile. The man provides a semen sample, which is analyzed through a spermiogram
Cycle timing: We monitor the menstrual cycle, check egg maturity and ovulation, which we then trigger at the optimal time.
Sperm collection and preparation: On the day of insemination, the partner provides a semen sample at the clinic. In the laboratory, it is processed to obtain the highest concentration of motile sperm and prepared in an insemination catheter. This takes place about an hour before the procedure.
Performing the insemination: The prepared sperm sample is introduced directly into the uterine cavity through a thin catheter. After the procedure, you can go home and rest.
Progesterone supplementation: After insemination, you receive medication to prepare the uterine lining for implantation and help maintain a potential pregnancy.
Pregnancy test: After 14 days, you can take a home urine pregnancy test. If positive, you will come for a follow‑up appointment. If negative, you will discuss further treatment options with your doctor.
When Insemination Makes Sense for a Couple
IUI can be a suitable first step when there is a realistic chance that fertilization can occur with only minimal medical assistance. We often recommend insemination to couples whose basic examinations are normal and the cause of infertility is unclear. In such cases, insemination can increase the likelihood that sperm and egg meet at the right time.
We also use this method when we see slightly impaired spermiogram results. Why? With a lower sperm count or reduced motility, we can select the best sperm from the sample and introduce them directly into the uterus.
When Insemination Is Not Enough
Unfortunately, there are cases where insemination is insufficient and may even prolong the journey to pregnancy. The woman’s age significantly affects the chances — as age increases, the number and quality of eggs naturally decline, and therefore the success rate of insemination decreases after age 35.
We do not recommend insemination when the woman has blocked fallopian tubes, as sperm cannot reach the egg. It is also not suitable for long‑term infertility or after repeated unsuccessful IUI attempts. In such cases, it makes sense to consider other methods with higher success rates.
You may now wonder how many insemination attempts to try. Most expert recommendations agree that 2 to 3 IUI cycles are ideal. If pregnancy does not occur, it is unlikely that additional cycles will increase the success rate.
What to Do When Insemination Isn’t Working
If pregnancy does not occur after several cycles, it is appropriate to reassess the next steps — most often IVF (in vitro fertilization).
The main difference between IVF and insemination is where fertilization occurs. As mentioned earlier, with insemination, sperm are introduced into the uterus and fertilization happens naturally inside the woman’s body. With IVF, fertilization takes place in the laboratory. Specialists monitor embryo development and select the one with the best potential. Thanks to this, the chance of pregnancy is higher than with insemination.
IVF can also address situations such as significantly reduced sperm quality or higher maternal age — factors that cannot be overcome with insemination. If insemination does not bring results, it does not mean nothing can be done. It is simply a signal to review the test results with your doctor and choose a treatment that offers the best chance of success.
Not Sure About the Next Step? We’re Here to Help
The journey to having a baby can be physically and emotionally demanding. Couples often come to insemination hoping it will be the step that brings a quick and desired result. But it doesn’t always turn out that way, and disappointment or uncertainty may follow. It’s important to remember that an unsuccessful insemination does not mean you did anything wrong. It’s a moment to reassess the situation and consider other treatment options.
At Prague Fertility Centre, we build on expertise and an individual approach.
Throughout the entire treatment, you are guided by one specialist who knows your whole story and will openly discuss the next steps with you. If you are unsure whether insemination is suitable in your situation, feel free to contact us. We will be happy to provide an initial consultation, review your test results, and find a treatment plan that gives you the best possible chance of having the baby you long for.
